Pop Idol reject's Eurovision bid

Failed Pop Idol contestant Jessica Garlick was today selected as the UK's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest.

The 20 year old from Swansea, south Wales was chosen in a public vote in the final of BBC1's Song for Europe, ahead of Heartbeat star Tricia Penrose, TV journalist Jonathan Maitland and boy band Level Best's James Tinkler.

She will represent the UK in front of an estimated 200 million viewers across 30 different countries when the Eurovision Song Contest takes place in the Estonian capital, Tallinn on May 25.

Garlick won with a ballad called Come Back, which she recorded just days after her departure from the ITV talent contest Pop Idol.

She collected nearly 68,000 of the 100,000 votes cast in the Song for Europe final.

She was selected for Eurovision on the same day that Pop Idol winner Will Young took the top spot in the charts with his debut single Evergreen.
