It caused social media consternation when Blake Lively posted an Instagram snap of husband Ryan Reynolds with their baby daughter James in a carrier on his chest.

The problem was, their precious tot was strapped in incorrectly.

And the 38-year-old admitted it in a mea culpa to Today host Matt Lauer as the photo flashed on the screen, confessing: 'The baby's not properly secured in the vessel that I'm wearing there.'

'I'm a first-time dad, and that is not the first mistake I've made. I can guarantee you it won't be last. I'd never used that particular carrier before. Every other time has been perfect.'

Blake, 27, posted the picture on Father's Day, June 21, showing the proud papa smiling as he stood on the grass in front of a marina with sweet baby James secured to his chest.

All that's visible of the tot, who was born in December, was her tiny feet clad in black socks with white spots. Her head is totally obscured.

The Gossip Girl alum jokingly captioned it: 'Since the day our baby was born, I've felt so strongly in my heart that you were most likely the father. '#ILoveYouSoMuchItsSilly.'

But their fans soon took to social media to admonish Ryan, with one saying that the device is secured around the waist first before the baby is lowered in, according to Yahoo! Parenting.

Ryan first met Blake on the set of Green Lantern early in 2010 and the couple married on September 9, 2012, at Boone Hall Plantation in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.

Meanwhile, former blonde Blake posted two instagram snaps introducing her new brunette hair colour on Tuesday.

In the first she's sitting on a wood and rope bridge in a mystery exotic location, captioned: 'Brondes have more fun #NoTypos-IKnowIThinkItsCrazyToo,' as she jokingly blended the words brunette and blonde.

In the second she gushes over a rocky outcrop, saying: 'Holy cow! A heart shaped mountain. Nothing more perfect than nature. Time to protect it!!! @livelokai and @world_wildlife are helping to save our animals #LetsDoOurPart #livelokai #IStillCantBelieveTheresAHeartShapedMountain--WaitTilNirvanaHearsAboutThis.'
