Owen leaves hospital after kidney operation

ITN newsreader Nicholas Owen today returned home after undergoing an operation to remove a cancerous kidney.

Owen, 55, said people had been "incredibly kind" to him and added that he was "extremely pleased" to be back at home in Reigate, Surrey.

Doctors discovered a tumour last week when Owen complained of feeling unwell and he was immediately admitted to hospital.

The medics said they were hopeful that they had caught the cancer before it had spread.

Owen said today: "I'm extremely pleased to be home. The doctors are very encouraging that all is now well.

"I look forward to a few weeks of reading and watching the news rather than delivering it.

"I've been overwhelmed by the many messages and good wishes I have had. People have been incredibly kind to me."

Owen is one of the channel's most highly regarded journalists and regularly presents ITV News bulletins. He is married with four children.
