A nine-year-old autistic boy was at the centre of a major search operation after disappearing five days ago.

Thousands of police and volunteers are involved in the land, air and sea hunt for Omarion Humphrey, who is believed to be unable to speak.

The child vanished during a visit to Lake Callis Recreation Area in Davison Township, Michigan, with his foster family on Saturday.

Chief Rick Freeman described the search for missing Omarion as the largest hunt for a child in decades, mlive reported.

Despite their efforts, police have been unable to find any trace of the schoolboy and have not ruled out that he was abducted.

Members of the boy's birth family are understood to have been quizzed and their homes searched as part of the probe, according to the Sun Herald.

'I'm afraid to rule anything out at this point,' Chief Freeman said according to mlive.

'Being honest, from the beginning, we went into this with an open mind, as we should on any investigation ... there's not been a lot ruled out.'

Omarion was reported missing at 6pm on Saturday by his foster family during a visit to the recreation ground.

The schoolboy was last captured on CCTV just under an hour earlier walking towards the park's splash pad.

The following day police issued an amber alert for Omarion, as the FBI and Homeland Security joined the investigation into his disappearance.

Since he vanished a specialist dive team have combed nearby lakes and police sniffer dogs have been seen going-over an area of dense woodland.

The boy's mother, Khisha Humphrey, told WJRT-TV that she believes somebody had taken her son from the park.

'I don't think he's in the wooded area at all,' she reportedly said.

They said Omarion was removed from Ms Humphrey's care earlier this year by the State.
