Stock markets fall as Greece's Yanis Varoufakis quits after referendum NO vote

The FTSE 100 index of leading shares in London fell 50 points or 0.8 per cent to 6,535.2 by mid-afternoon, while the German and French leading indices were both down 2 per cent. But market volatility was not as bad as many in the City had feared after Yanis Varoufakis sensationally quit following the country's overwhelming vote to reject the austerity terms demanded by international creditors.

UPDATED With around an hour and a half of trading to go in London, the FTSE 100 index was down 43.4 points, or 0.7 per cent at 6,542.4, way below the day's opening peak of 6,585.78, but above the session low of 6,506.71. In early trade on Wall Street, the blue chip Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 66.9 points at 17,663.2, while the broader S&P; 500 was down 7.2 points at 2,069.6, and the tech-laden Nasdaq Composite fell 14.6 points at 4,994.6. All the indices were recovering from bigger opening falls.
