Ricky: Vida Loca burned me out

He was the singer with the world at his feet.

With smouldering good looks, money and fame, Ricky Martin was the envy of colleagues and an idol for millions.

But the Latin singer dropped out of sight at his peak because, he now admits, he was "tired of the glamour, the limos and the private jets".

He told the New York Daily News that he was "burned out and really tired" after his 1999 hit Livin' La Vida Loca.

"Having people idolise you and tell you how good you are creates this grandiose feeling, and you have to be careful," added Martin, 31.

In a two-year break he embarked on a quest for religious knowledge in India, wore robes and turbans, grew a beard and forgot "things like wearing underwear".

His new album, Almas del Silencio (Sounds of Silence), is full of heartfelt ballads.
