  • Women shave underarms 11 times and legs nine times a month
  • FEMAIL has compiled the ultimate guide to hair removal ahead of summer

More than half of all women are concerned about excess body hair, ranking it just behind weight gain for body dissatisfaction.

It’s estimated that one in ten women suffers from excess facial and body hair - and spend hours laboriously plucking, shaving, waxing and dyeing.

Indeed, research by Wilkinson Sword revealed that women will shave or wax their underarms 11 times a month, their legs nine times a month and their bikini area five times a month.

In light of this, from bikini line landscaping to facial fuzz faux pas, FEMAIL has compiled the ultimate guide to hair removal ahead of summer.

FACIAL HAIR

Women have facial hair, just like men, albeit usually finer, light-coloured strands, which are known as vellus hair.

According to the NHS, nearly 75 per cent of women have increased facial hair as they get older, especially after the menopause.

Hormonal imbalances and conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome can also stimulate increased facial hair growth, though much of it can be down to genes.

Recent reports claimed that women should shave their faces. As well as slicing off this fine hair, shaving removes the top layer of dead skin cells, so it is exfoliating.

Dr Michael Prager, an aesthetic clinician who has a practice in London, told the Daily Mail: ‘From an anti-ageing point of view, home shaving has some effect.

‘It’s like a mild form of microdermabrasion, so encourages collagen production, which reduces wrinkles. Whenever there’s trauma to the skin, collagen is stimulated to help cell renewal.’

Beauty therapist Nathalie Eleni also believes in the power of removing hair from your face because, she says, it helps to give make-up a more flawless finish.

She said: 'A fuzz-free face makes for an easier make-up application - smooth skin ensures foundation won’t sit in your hairs.

'Hairs around the upper lip and chin can create a dark shadow which can be unflattering and by removing these, not only will skin feel smoother to the touch, you will feel more confident too.

'The facial epilation device, Braun Face, is ideal for gentle hair removal as it removes hair from the root rather than cutting it at the surface and as a result, hairs will grow back more tapered and fine, so will feel softer to the touch.'

If an epilator sounds too daunting, Tweezerman has a quirky £20 gadget that may be the answer to your facial fuzz woes.

The Smooth Finish Facial Hair Remover is an innovative tool that has the same effect as threading and promises to offer precise, smooth hair removal that you can do yourself in the privacy of your own home.

This handy tool promises to minimise re-growth as it grasps the entire hair, including the follicle, removing hair at the root using a metal coil to trap unwanted hairs.

Tweezers can also work - albeit not as effectively - but the main thing to remember is to never pluck rogue sprouters using your fingers.

ARMS, LEGS AND BIKINI LINE

Whatever you do, do not shave your arm hair.

If your skin tone is light and your hairs are thin, try bleaching them to ensure they are less obvious (brands like Veet and Nair have good product options if you want to go down this route).

EYEBROWS

Ever since Cara Delevingne and her bushy brows burst onto the scene, eyebrows have become big business.

Just like your hairstyle, the shape of your eyebrows can make or break your entire face.

But with so many options to choose from - from thick and thin to straight and arched - how do you know which style is right for your face?

FEMAIL has called on the best brow experts in the business to share their golden rules for each face shape with a little help from our favourite famous muses.

The shape of your eyebrows can make or break your entire face and there's a specific style to suit each face shape. FEMAIL, along with the best brow experts, have compiled the ultimate guide

'Eyebrows can become sparser with age, but with a little expert help, you too can have well-shaped and defined brows, which can make an incredible difference to your look,' said Jodie Mills, Hi Brow Expert Therapist.

'Defining the brows opens up the eye area and helps to create a more youthful look. You should create a brow shape that frames the face.

'A well groomed stylised brow, whatever the shape, arch or curvature should reflect and enhance the whole face - no longer is it enough to simply follow the natural brow line.'

Lisa Potter Dixon, head make-up and trend artist and brow expert for Benefit Cosmetics, added: 'That's right; if your eyebrows start, arch and end In the correct place, your face will look immediately more structured and your eyes will look bigger.'

If, like Alessandra Ambrosio, left, you have a long face, you should opt for a straight brow
If you're square like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, right, a clean, sharp style, will balance out the harder lines that frame the face

If, like Alessandra Ambrosio, you are the proud owner of a long face, you should opt for a straight brow with extended length. This gives the illusion of width to the face.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is the perfect square faced muse. Take the supermodel's lead and opt for a soft curve or arched brow. A clean, sharp style, which will balance out the harder lines that frame the face, is the perfect style for this face shape.

Rounder faces like Kate Upton should go slightly shorter with their brow length so to avoid accentuating the width of the face.

Styling your brows into a clearly defined arch will give shape and length to the face. As Nina Leykind, founder of Eyeko, explains: ‘Arch brows have always been an anti-ageing secret because they frame your face and widen your eyes.'

If you have an oval face shape, count yourself blessed. This is considered to be the perfect shape, and, like Jessica Alba, you can pull off any brow shape.

So what are the tricks of the trade when it comes to creating perfect brows, whatever your face shape? 'A powder brow colour creates a more natural finish that is more flattering to your face and less ageing than a pencil can be,' explains Jodie.

'A useful way of ensuring that the correct eyebrow shape is achieved is to ensure that the inner corner of the eyebrow starts directly in line from the side of the nose, the end of the brow directly in line with the outer corner of the eye and the high arch of the brow directly in line with the centre point of the iris.

'This is a general guideline and should be adapted to each individual client’s natural shaped brow and face shape.'

So what colour shoudld you opt for? 'If black is bold for you, experiment with a dark brown, In any case, it's best to sketch out the shape with a shade that's lighter than your hair, and then you can gradually deepen and define,' advises Sharon Dowsett, Maybelline UK makeup director.

'To find your best brow shape, leave it to the professionals,' said brow guru, Shavata Singh. 'They will analyse the whole face, lifestyle and your age before deciding on a suitable shape. The whole process takes no longer than 15mins. Even if you only go once in your life, to 'find' your shape, it will be worth it, but you should aim to get your eyebrows professionally shaped every 2-3 weeks.'
