They're back! Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman return as Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson in Victorian-era teaser snapshot of new series

Their last series was such a success that the production of a new one is, well, elementary.

So fans of hit series Sherlock will be delighted to see Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are back in the crime-fighting partnership for the BBC.

Dressed in Victoria-era clothing, a snapshop preview of the new season was unveiled by the BBC on Thursday, as preliminary promotion for it begins.

Dressed in classic three-piece suits, the critically acclaimed actors cut dapper figures in the image, which sees them share a green leather arm chair.

Looking deep in thought, Benedict, 38, can be seen in a pinstriped trouser with a crisp white shirt as he stares into the camera.

Meanwhile, Martin, 43 - who perches to his right - sports a houndstooth suit and handlebar moutsache, complete with pocket watch.

The photograph - the first official image of the forthcoming series - was later followed by a second teaser snapshot, depicting the pair in action.

They surface as the show's creator, Steven Moffat, joins producer Sue Vertue and co-star Rupert Graves in California to attend this year’s Comic-Con.

The annual event sees thousands of fans meet in a celebration of the programme's genre, meaning they surely have a captive audience.

The press shot pretty much confirms what has long been predicted: that the present-day adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's franchise will step back in time for the special episode, which is expected to air around Christmas time.

A fourth series comprising of three episodes is expected to follow suit in 2016.

The upcoming series of the popular show, which was created by Moffat and Mark Gatiss, is set to be 'the most shocking and surprising series of Sherlock yet' according to the BBC.

'Of course, it's far too early to say what's coming, but we're reasonably confident that the very next thing to happen to Sherlock and John, is the very last thing you'd expect,' Moffat revealed last year.

Benedict - who recently became a father with wife Sophie Hunter - shared that his parents were actually keen for him to become a barrister rather than an actor.

'[Acting is] a very odd, peripatetic, crazed, out of your control work and social schedule. It's very hard to plan a family life, yet alone know where the next pay cheque is coming from so they worked very, very hard as my parents, and actors, to afford me an education whereby I had the opportunity and the privilege to try and channel myself towards other goals,' he said.

His parents Wanda Ventham and Timothy Carlton were both actors.
