Teacher who downloaded porn jailed

A 53-year-old teacher who stored more than 50,000 indecent internet images of children - including more than 20 containing scenes of sadism and bestiality - has been jailed for 14 months.

Richard Sugden, a twice-divorced father-of-four, admitted 15 specimen counts of downloading pornographic images during a hearing at Ipswich Crown Court.

Judge John Devaux was told that 28 of the images stored on CDs contained pictures classed by the law as "level five" - material containing scenes of sadism or bestiality involving children.

Another 59 were images classed as "level four", which contain images of sexual intercourse involving children and adults.

Passing sentence, Judge Devaux said: "Make no mistake, these offences do concern the abuse of children.

"Offences of this nature are not victimless crimes. They perpetuate the continued abuse of children.

"They fuel a demand for young people who are abused in this way."

Judge Devaux made it clear that there was no suggestion that Sugden, who was a teacher at Suffolk Further Education College in Ipswich, had abused or harmed children directly.

He also gave Sugden credit for his guilty plea.

Sugden, who teaches mathematics, wrote a mitigating statement which was read out in court. He blamed the stress of losing contact with his children following two divorces, the break up of relationships and the pressure of work for his crimes.
