Babs breaks ankle in fall

EastEnders star Barbara Windsor has broken her ankle, her spokesman said yesterday.

The 66-year-old star slipped on the stairs of her London home, fracturing her ankle in two places, her manager Barry Burnett said.

Windsor, who plays the landlady Peggy Mitchell in EastEnders, has undergone surgery and is expected to remain in hospital for at least another two days, Burnett added.

Windsor's screen career took off when she appeared in the film Carry On Spying in 1964, and appeared in nine of the 31 films in the Carry On franchise.

Earlier this year she was diagnosed with the rare energy-sapping Epstein-Barr virus, but is now recovering well, her manager said.

The actress, who is married to 39-year-old Scott Harvey, is taking a break from playing Peggy Mitchell in EastEnders.
