A 27-year-old married teacher who seduced and engaged in a sex act with a 17-year-old student has dodged her prison sentence after striking a plea deal.

Jennifer Marie Perry, 27, pleaded guilty to having sexual contact with the boy in a parked car around Pinson, Alabama, earlier this year.

Perry reportedly knew the boy from church and did not teach him at Pinson Valley High School, where she taught ninth grade English. Details of their encounter remain unclear.

According to AL.com, Perry was facing a felony charge over the sexual contact - which could have seen her jailed for 20 years.

But after agreeing to a plea deal, the charge was dropped to a misdemeanor, which has much more lenient terms.

She was sentenced to six months in jail, but the sentence was immediately suspended. Instead she will be on unsupervised probation for a year, and have to pay a $250 fine.

Even in the face of her softer sentence, Perry's lawyer still argued that she was being too harshly punished, and called for reform of Alabama's sex offender laws, which he called 'draconian'.

Attorney Richard Jaffe said: 'Ms. Perry is relieved to now be able to move forward with her life rather than risk the uncertain possibility of a felony and its consequences.

'The Alabama sexual registration laws are draconian and need to be changed to fit the facts and the individuals.'

Perry, who is married to her high school sweetheart and lives in the town of Odenville 20 miles from her former school, quit her job after rumors of the sexual encounter began to circulate.

According to local sheriffs, Perry herself put school authorities on the trail of the illicit encounter by telling them about the rumors in a bid to head them off.

Instead, school authorities investigated and found out they were true, then called in law enforcement. Perry was arrested in March.

Perry married her husband, Blake, in May 2011, according to Facebook.

They met when they were freshman in high school and have been together ever since, she wrote on a bio on the school's website. They now live together with their three dogs.

She is a graduate of Jacksonville State University and was in her first year of teaching at the school, according to the bio.

'I am incredibly excited to be spending my first year as a Pinson Valley Indian spreading my love of literature with students,' she wrote.
