If your local high-street just doesn't cut the mustard for sales shopping, you may need to look further afield for genuine bargains.

Shops in cities throughout the world are preparing to cut prices on autumn/winter collections to make way for next season's latest designs.

Buying abroad ensures you get the priceless high of bagging a bargain alongside the knowledge that friends, family and colleagues are unlikely to snap the same item.

Below, we've rounded up six of the best cities for shopping in the January sales:

New York Sales in the Big Apple run from January 1 to February 1.

At the end of the month, the whole of New York state takes part in a tax-free shopping week. Purchases under $110 (£65) on clothes and footwear are free of the normally mandatory sales tax (around 8.5 per cent).

'The major department stores, Saks, Bloomingdales and Macys are similar to the Harrods sale in the UK but you can pick up designer clothes at much cheaper prices,' says Alex Bergin from the London arm of the New York Visitors' Bureau.

'The weak dollar also means you're currently getting almost two dollars to the pound'. 40 miles outside of New York the Woodbury Common Premium Outlet centre has 240 designer stores and the same huge January sales.

Expect savings anywhere between 25 and 60 per cent on brands including Dolce & Gabbana, Gap, Nike, Ralph Lauren and Timberland among others.

New York's Paint the Town Red scheme, created after September 11 to entice visitors back to the city runs again this year until March 31st.

The card offers discounts on accommodation, restaurants, shows and tours. Shoppers can print off Paint the Town tokens and, used in conjunction with an American Express card, get discounts at shops throughout the city and at Woodbury Common.

The tax-free shopping week begins on January 26 and runs until February 1 in 2004. Visit for further information.

Fly to New York with British Airways during the last week in January from £199. Visit
