Officer 'stabbed to death by husband'

Detectives investigating the death of a young policewoman and her husband confirmed she was stabbed to death.

Police believe 23-year-old Pc Clare Mace was killed, and that her husband Richard committed suicide.

Officers broke into their home in Clayton-le-Moors, Lancashire, after neighbours raised the alarm.

A spokesman for Lancashire Constabulary said today: "At this stage it is thought that Clare died from stab wounds, and that Richard died from self-inflicted injuries.

"We are not seeking anyone else in connection with the inquiry."

A police spokesman confirmed that the couple, who married when Pc Mace was 18, had separated a week ago.

The pair had no children, and had been living together at the address for a year.

The body of Pc Mace, a patrol officer for Lancashire Constabulary based in Nelson, was found in a downstairs room. Her 26-year-old husband was discovered dead upstairs.

Police confirmed today that the young constable, who was originally from the Burnley area, had recently finished her probationary period with the force.

Pc Mace, whose maiden name was Brierton, decided to become an officer in December 2001 after leaving the army. It was while serving in the armed forces that she met her future husband, who had grown up in the Middlesbrough area.
