Seven arrested in fatal shooting case

Seven people have been arrested in a police swoop on addresses in Bristol, Northern Ireland and Birmingham following a fatal shooting in a city centre street.

More than 200 officers carried out simultaneous raids in connection with the murder of 32-year-old Stephen Henry, who was shot in Bristol six months ago.

Avon and Somerset Police, together with the Police Service of Northern Ireland and West Midlands Constabulary, were also executing a total of 53 search warrants.

Forty of the warrants are in the Bristol area, 10 in Belfast and the remainder in Birmingham, police said.

Codenamed Operation Crystal, the swoop was a result of a six-month investigation and was supported by armed and uniformed officers from across the country.

Detectives went on to arrest five people in Bristol for murder and conspiracy to murder Mr Henry. They were being taken to police stations throughout the force area.

A further two people were detained in Birmingham.

Mr Henry was shot three times as he got into the driving seat of his car after leaving a city nightclub in the early hours of September 14 last year.

He had spent the night at The Level, Park Row, and left with a friend and two women.

After walking to his yellow Fiat Punto car, which was parked in nearby Woodland Road, a man shot at him four times. Three of the bullets hit him and he died later from his injuries.

The two women, who witnessed the shooting, ran off, but were later traced and interviewed by police. Although police did not recover a gun at the scene, detectives believe the weapon used was a .38 revolver.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset police said: "Specialist search teams will now be used to comb each address for paper work and documentation to support the investigation, and they will be supported by forensic experts."

The Operation Crystal team carried out a number of raids in November 2003, when eight people were arrested for offences linked to the same murder inquiry.

Officers raided 14 addresses in Bristol and Portishead, and eight men were arrested for conspiracy to blackmail, and attempted murder.

These arrests were connected to a related shooting in Fishponds, Bristol, on August 27.

Six of the arrested men were charged and remain in custody awaiting trial.
