The world's most expensive player was one of several famous faces at the two-day event staged at Newport's Celtic Manor, which attracted thousands of fans on Sunday - with most keen to catch a glimpse of their returning hero.

Following victory, the 25-year-old shared an Instagram picture of Wales' enthusiastic final-hole celebrations, accompanied by the caption: 'What a weekend @thecelticmanor, great to see so many fans turn out, and even better getting the W with the Welsh boys #CelebCup'

Bale was paired with comedian Brydon in the final against Scotland and looked visibly delighted as he celebrated with team-mates including Philip Glenister and Gethin Jones - having spent last month practising with a round at the US Open and future Ryder Cup course Bethpage.

'The Celebrity Cup is brilliantly organised and a great tournament for a great cause,' Bale told Wales Online of the event that raised a significant amount for .

The former Tottenham winger, who has been linked with a Premier League return to Manchester United this summer, was besieged by autograph hunters as he played with Jones against England World Cup winner Mike Tindall and star of Dragons Den Peter Jones.

'Let's see what you've got Tindall,' Bale said to the England rugby star before adding: 'It would be great to top today off by beating the English!'

The Welshman did beat the English before avoiding a lunchtime downpour to set up a final round against Scotland, which ended more successfully than his difficult second season at the Bernabeu.

The winger, who is on the verge of taking his country to the European Championships, previously admitted he felt more nervous swinging a club in front of spectators than playing football in front of 80,000 supporters.

'Heading onto the golf course was a lot more nerve-racking,' said Bale. 'I'm completely out of my comfort zone but it's really good fun. I was a little bit nervous stood there on the first tee but I actually hit a really great shot and then couldn't find my ball!

'I've been playing with Sir Gareth Edwards, which has been great. To play with such a legend was an honour. The tournament has been great but I don't think you'll see me on the PGA tour anytime soon.'

Kenny Dalglish, Alan Hansen and Gordon Strachan are all spearheading the Scotland charge as the four nations go head-to-head in Wales, with England having won last year's final.

The four nations - England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales - compete in teams of six for the event, in which thousands of fans flocked to the five-star Newport resort last summer to watch the action.

Each team will boast six celebrities as they compete in the third annual tournament.

'I can't believe we've won it,' said Brydon after Wales sealed victory.

'The people who deserve the credit are the people who can play golf and Gareth Bale has been out of this world.'

And in a dig at the other home nations, Brydon joked: 'It's nice to see the other nations having to smile at a Welsh victory.

'We have done this for Dylan Thomas and we will do it again!'
