Strauss set for debut

England today brought Andrew Strauss in for a Test debut against New Zealand on his home ground of Lord's under new captain Marcus Trescothick.

Michael Vaughan's absence through injury made the first day of this npower series a huge moment in the careers of Strauss and Trescothick, the former brought in to replace the captain at the top of the order and the latter asked to lead the Test team for the first time.

England's new wicketkeeper-batsman Geraint Jones knew he would also be under the microscope as home supporters get their first chance to assess his credentials set against those of his predecessor Chris Read, whom he replaced when he made his debut in Antigua last month.

The other selection issue saw Simon Jones preferred to his fellow fast bowler James Anderson, from England's 13-man squad.

New Zealand were set to be led by fit-again captain Stephen Fleming in a line-up first published 48 hours ago.
