Trescothick fit, but rain delays play

Last updated at 16:52 24 June 2004

Marcus Trescothick was passed fit for today's opening NatWest Series match between England and New Zealand which was delayed by bad weather at Old Trafford.

As expected, Trescothick recovered sufficiently from his twisted ankle to be available to England, who nonetheless chose not to name their team while heavy showers persisted in Manchester.

Overnight rain had already saturated the outfield, and the most likely prospect was a significantly-shortened first match in this triangular limited-overs series which will also involve the West Indies.

Match conditions confirmed that the latest possible time to start this day-night encounter would be 7.47pm.

Following two pitch inspections it is lookin increasingly unlikely that play will start today.
