His wife is behind bars, accused of asking escaped murderers Richard Matt and David Sweat to kill him.

But Lyle Mitchell insists he is still sticking by his other half Joyce, despite her suspected trysts with the inmates as she allegedly helped them escape from a maximum-security prison.

The instructor at Clinton Correctional Facility in upstate New York, who worked alongside his wife before she was jailed, calls her every day in prison and plans to visit her this weekend.

Lyle Mitchell insists he is sticking by his other half Joyce, despite the fact she has been charged with helping Richard Matt and David Sweat escape from an upstate New York prison

His attorney, Peter Dumas, told ABC News, Lyle plans to stay with the 51-year old, who is accused of giving the inmates hacksaws and other tools used to cut through the walls of their cells at the maximum-security prison and crawl into a steam pipe.

'Lyle never said exactly 'I plan on staying with Joyce' but over a period of time with Lyle talking and visiting Joyce in jail, he doesn't plan on a divorce,' he told the station.

'Lyle calls Joyce everyday and he is visiting her today and plans to visit her this weekend. It's pretty clear by his actions right now he plans to stay with her,' he added.

Despite Lyle's intentions, Joyce could be in custody for a lengthy period of time because he doesn't have the money to post her bail.

The court has set Mitchell's bail at $100,000 cash or $200,000 bond for the felony and $10,000 cash or $20,000 bond for the misdemeanor.

Her legal issues are impacting Lyle's life. He has been unable to return to work so he can meet with investigators and her legal team.

Lyle's attorney says his client calls her every day, visits her at weekends and has never implied he would be leaving her side, even though he said the process is 'maddening' for him

Joyce has been accused of giving escapees Matt (left) and Sweat (right) hacksaws and other tools used to cut through the walls of their cells at the maximum-security prison, allowing them just three weeks of freedom

Dumas added: 'He's anxious -- he's not the kind of guy that sits around. The whole process is maddening for him.'

The manhunt for the killers ended on June 28 when Sweat was shot and captured by authorities two days after Matt was gunned down and killed.

Joyce is said to have had a 'moment of clarity' when she decided to let her husband live while dining with him at a Chinese restaurant.

Reports suggest she was supposed to meet up with the pair before driving them towards the Mexican border.

It was while she sat across from her husband at the restaurant that she made the choice to no longer be apart of the plot that would have seen Lyle Mitchell, referred to as 'the glitch' killed, according to the Buffalo News.

In a decision that saved her husband's life she had to turn on Matt and Sweat, who she told investigators 'made her feel special', as she was made apart of the plot that excited her.

Joyce was allegedly behind the plot to kill her husband, but is said to have changed her mind after sitting down for Chinese food with him

An intricate blueprint was formulated by the convicts and Mitchell is said to have been sworn to secrecy - although she was only given sketchy details of the escape plan - and was asked to bring in basic tools, including protective eyewear and speed bag gloves.

While she let her husband live, Mitchell, who has been charged in connection with the escape did not stop Matt and Sweat's prison break that led to a three-week search.

Initially Lyle's lawyer said his client was completely unaware of his wife's actions and had been forced to slowly start rebuilding his life.

He had no role in the escape and was completely blind to his wife's actions.

On Wednesday it was revealed that Matt was speaking to a pen pal for at least three years.

The woman, who refers to herself as BonJo to protect her identity, revealed in a new interview that she first began corresponding with Matt when he became friends with her husband, who was housed on the same cell block.

She then began frequently sending him packages and letter, and received her final letter from Matt on June 5 - hours before he and Richard Sweat escaped from the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York.

'I sent Valentines cards, birthday cards, Father’s Day cards Christmas cards, you know, he was like family,' BonJo told WIVB about her pen pal, who she called Rick.k
