Beyonce, Coldplay and Ed Sheeran to headline free Global Citizen Festival in NYC to support global poverty charity

Some of the biggest names in the music industry are lined up to play at a charity concert in Central Park, New York, in a bid to help end poverty.

Beyonce, Coldplay and Ed Sheeran were announced on Wednesday as headliners of the Global Citizen Festival, which takes place on September 26.

The 'Crazy in Love' hitmaker - whose Chime for Change campaign has partnered with the festival to empower young women - confirmed: 'I am honoured to be a part of the Global Citizen Festival.

'It has always stood for improving the lives of people everywhere, but this year is especially rewarding as we all join focuses and utilize our talents for one goal: to end extreme poverty globally.'

Alongside the stellar line up of US music stars, seven-time Grammy Award winners Coldplay will take to the stage - as Chris Martin announced at the launch at Milk Studios in New York on Wednesday .

Fellow Brit Ed Sheeran, who has sold almost five million copies of his second album 'x' since it was released last year, is also geared up to perform.

Iconic rockers Pearl Jam are also confirmed as headliners on the bill of the fourth annual benefit concert, which will take place on the Great Lawn of the Park, in front of ticket holders who have earned a free ticket by taking actions against inequality.

The event aims to raise awareness of the United Nations' efforts to end extreme poverty by 2030 as well as fighting inequality and protecting the earth.

Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard explained: 'We hope Pearl Jam fans will sign up to become Global Citizens - not just to earn tickets to the show - but to be part of a movement that encourages leaders of nations with the greatest wealth to apply aid, trade and governance policies in support of nations and communities in the greatest need.

'People living on less $1.50-a-day deserve the opportunity to lift themselves up out of extreme poverty.'

The concert has previously hosted performances from Foo Fighters, Sting, Jay Z, No Doubt and John Legend - and tickets are free to those who visit Global Citizen's website and earn admission points.

This year’s Festival says it aims to be a key platform for world leaders to commit their nation’s and organization’s specific plans to accomplish the upcoming Global Goals, which are announced by the UN General Assembly the day before, on September 25.
