  • The killer animal was in full attack mode as it chased a fish to the shore
  • However, the water was too shallow and the shark was forced to retreat

An Italian holidaymaker found a good reason not to go in the water after taking a video of the sunrise over a deserted beach - and capturing a shark on camera.

And this wasn't a bathing fish either.

The killer animal was in full attack mode as it chased a tasty fish all the way to shore.

However, the much larger shark could not get as close to the beach as the fish, and was forced to turn round and swim back out to sea before it could capture it.

Thankfully, the shark did not wind up getting stranded by swimming too close to shore.

After the shark had retreated, the nervous fish then swam left and right to try and make sure all was safe before swimming along the shore for a few metres and heading back out to sea as well.

The images were captured by a holidaymaker on the Punta Prosciutto beach, in the Salento area of the Apulia region of southern Italy.

They had been enjoying solitude in the early morning and recording the sunrise in the quiet when they noticed a splash in the water and seconds later the shark and its prey appearing.

The video first went viral after it was published by local Italian paper Repubblica.
