Dirty money! Camilla auctions off Andy Murray's filthy sweatband that she took home from Wimbledon last week to raise money for charity

  • Duchess of Cornwall was given Andy Murray's sweatband last Thursday
  • She was sitting next to Philip Brook in the Royal Box when he caught it
  • Camilla later contacted Murray to ask that he choose a charity to aid
  • Bidding has begun on the wristband on eBay with a start price of £50

She delighted crowds by gleefully accepting Andy Murray's sweaty wristband at Wimbledon last week.

But it seems the Duchess of Cornwall is not quite as keen to hold on to the soaked souvenir, instead putting it up for auction in aid of charity.

The sweatband, which Murray hurled in Camilla's direction after beating Robin Haase in straight sets last Thursday, is to be sold on eBay next week.

All funds raised from the sale will be donated to The Royal Veterinary College Animal Care Trust of which the Duchess is a patron.

It is understood Murray, who will play Roger Federer in a hotly anticipated semi-final later today, chose the charity himself after speaking with Camilla following his match.

'HRH The Duchess of Cornwall would like fans to have the chance to bid for @Andy_Murray’s wristband from last week’s game,' a statement on the Clarence House Twitter page said today.

'That’s why The Duchess has decided to donate it to auction, so fans get a unique chance to own a piece of #Wimbledon history.

'All proceeds will go to the @AnimalCareTrust.. The Duchess is Patron and the charity was chosen by @AndyMurray.'

The Duchess made contact with the World Number Two to thank him and requested he select an organisation that may benefit from the sale, a Clarence House confirmed.

Crowds delighted when Camilla accepted the sweat-soaked garment from the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club chairman Philip Brook who had caught it.

The royal dutifully clutched the sweatband in one hand while she fanned herself in the stands on Thursday

After playfully turning up her nose at the sweatband, she clutched it in one hand before putting it in her handbag after Thursday's match.

Murray later told the BBC he had not mean to hurl the sweatband towards the royal box.

Speaking to Sue Barker, he said: 'It wasn't at all on purpose, I was trying to throw it into where all of the fans were and it kind of bent right round to the left/

'I saw (the Duchess) and Phil Brook just after the march when I was walking back to the loker rooms and I said to Phil "I saw I hit you with the wristband."

'The Duchess just opened up her bag and she had it.'

Murray has breezed through this year's tournament to the semi-finals where today he will face his rival Roger Federer.

The Scot was in high spirits as he warmed up in practice sessions earlier on Friday, smiling and greeting fans as he made his way through the club's grounds.
