To any discerning traveller a week in Malia conjures up images of thudding music, crowded bars and general rowdiness but this wasn't what we we found when we arrived on 1st May.

To our delight we were swiftly ensconced to the San Giorgio apartments. They were spotlessly clean and with everything working and in good order with a welcoming snack provided as we walked through the door.

The resort had not yet begun its tourist season so was very clean and quiet. The staff were polite and eager to please after their work siesta of 5 months or so. Evenings were velvety warm and we could stroll at our leisure through the many different parts of Malia. Our particular favourite was Malia Old Town where we encountered the help of an elderly Cretian gentleman whom on learning we were unable to find a particularly sought after restaurant personally escorted us there whilst we exchanged a little learned "Greek" language.

We also managed to swim, horse ride and go-kart without queues, jostling crowds and inflated prices.

Our piece de resistance however was when we hired scooters and took to the mountains. The roads were almost traffic-free and we were able to enjoy spectacular views. As an eagle soared above our heads the dramatic aura of Crete was magical with Malia resort only being minutes away.

On returning home, we were all relaxed, tanned and proud of our trip to Malia, and without a mosquito bite in sight!
