Chief public relations officer of Western Railway, Sharat Chandrayan, told The Hindu the train went on to climb the platform as it crossed its track limit.

He said: 'The train got entangled with the buffer, four were injured, all of them went home, and one lady has deferred to hospital for further investigation.'

Suburban train services were disrupted for a while after Sunday's accident, which is said to have been caused by the driver failing to apply his brakes on time.

The authorities are conducting a detailed investigation into the matter, and renovation of the platform where the accident took place has begun.

'We have launched an inquiry into the incident and the motorman of the locomotive LS Tiwari, guard Ajay Gohil and loco inspector MG Verma have been suspended,' Press Trust of India quoted railway official Shailendra Kumar as saying.
