Patrick Dempsey spends a father-son outing with Darby at Malibu beach... after paying tribute to his late co-star Amanda Peterson

After hearing about the news of his co-star Amanda Peterson's death, he has been surrounding himself with loved ones.

On Thursday, Patrick Dempsey was spotted spending some quality father-son bonding with his eight-year-old twin son Darby at a beach in Malibu, California.

The 49-year-old actor appeared to be in a somber mood as he doted on his little man on the shoreline.

Patrick was dressed in casual beach attire, wearing a black T-shirt, beige trousers and a trucker hat.

The former Grey's Anatomy star kept his eyes shielded with dark sunglasses and kept his hands in his pockets while taking a stroll.

The single father-of-three carried his son's green towel over his shoulders and watched on as Darby splashed in the waters, sporting a blue rash guard and orange board shorts.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Patrick's former co-star Amanda Peterson died at the age of 43.

The pair had starred together in the beloved 80s teen movie Can't Buy Me Love.

Amanda's body was found at her home in Greeley, Colorado after she had not been heard from for a couple of days. The cause of death has yet to be determined, and an autopsy was performed on Monday.

Patrick tweeted his condolences writing: 'In my memory, she will always be vibrant and young... Gone too soon. Sending my thoughts and prayers to Amanda's family.' 

The on-screen couple's 1987 romantic comedy was arguably his big break, and undeniably Peterson's most famous role.

Meanwhile, Patrick has been spending his acting hiatus with his children after estranged wife Jillian filed for divorce in January after 15 years of marriage.

The makeup artist requested joint legal and physical of their three children: Talula, 12, and his eight-year-old twins Darby and Sullivan.

A reported $40 million in assets is said to be up for grabs in the divorce since the couple had no pre-nup.

Meanwhile his Grey's Anatomy character Derek Shepherd - one of the original cast members - was shockingly killed off this season.

Amid rumours of a conflict with showrunner Shonda Rhimes, the actor spoke out about his character's untimely ending after reportedly signing up for two more years

He told Entertainment Weekly: 'It just sort of unfolded in a very organic way.

'I don't remember the date. It was not in the fall. Maybe February or March. It happened very quickly.'

He added: 'It really was something that was kind of surprising that unfolded, and it just naturally came to be. Which was pretty good. I like the way it has all played out.'
