Kate Winslet came to Sienna Miller's aid when the news broke of Jude Law's fling with his children's nanny.

The Oscar-nominated star rang Sienna and offered her support and advice.

Interestingly, Kate had met Sienna while playing Jude's girlfriend in the new film version of All The King's Men.

Sienna visited Jude while the movie was shooting in New Orleans last winter.

Kate talked to Sienna after the producers of As You Like It had given the 23-year-old a night off from the London stage to help her pull herself together.

When Sienna wondered aloud if she would be able to go straight back into the play, Kate told her that she had to go on, and that she would just have to endure the unpleasant nightly jostling from the gorilla-like paparazzi who have made her life a living hell.

"Smile and say nothing," Kate is said to have advised Sienna.

Kate made no judgment about whether Sienna should continue going out with Jude.

"She just wanted to help because she's been put through the wringer herself and knows what it's like," a close friend of both women told me.

"She told Sienna that she shouldn't hide herself away. The funny thing was that Sienna couldn't hide anyway, because she was going on stage every night and people knew where she was going to be."

As it happens, Sienna has said that she will continue to live her life the way she wants - and that means continuing to see Jude.

"If I can't live my life in London, see who I want, when I want, then I may have to think about leaving the country," Sienna told me recently.

She and Jude are planning to go away for a break - out of the country - once As You Like It ends its successful run at Wyndhams Theatre tomorrow night.

Sienna stars as Celia with her close friend, award-winning actress Helen McCrory, playing Rosalind.

Meanwhile, Kate is in New York about to complete her work on the film Little Children.

She's a potential best supporting actress candidate for her role in All The King's Men.
