Ice factor

The biggest indoor ice climbing centre in the world, The Ice Factor was built on the site of a derelict and disused aluminum smelter in the village of Kinlocheleven in Scotland.

The area had been listed by Friends of the Earth as being one of the top five most polluted pieces of land in the world.

The Ice Factor brought vital regeneration to the area and its community.

The centre features the UK's only ice climbing wall. Over 15 meters high and made of compressed snow, it gives the opportunity for beginners, the disabled and inner-city children to learn the basics of mountain climbing - for free.

"This would not have been possible without the National Lottery funding of £275,000, which went on building the whole mountaineering centre and our technically advanced facilities," says Jamie

Smith, managing director of the Ice Factor.
