Brooke Shields is having another baby

Brooke Shields is pregnant with her second child. The actress, who famously battled severe postnatal depression, is due to give birth in the spring, her publicist confirmed.

She and her husband Christopher Henchy have a young daughter, Rowan Francis, born in 2003.

Shields, 40, made headlines worldwide when she blasted back at Tom Cruise after he criticised her for taking antidepressants to cope with post-natal depression.

Cruise sparked controversy in June when he criticised Shields for her drug use, calling her irresponsible and claiming she could have taken vitamins to cure her depression.

The Suddenly Susan actress branded his comments a "disservice to women everywhere" in an editorial in the New York Times. She said if any good can come from the actor's "ridiculous rant" it would give much needed attention to a serious condition.

She chronicled her experiences in a book published earlier this year titled Down Came the Rain: My Journey Through Postpartum Depression.

Shields has played Roxie Hart in the long-running Broadway revival of Chicago since September 9. She has also appeared on Broadway as Rizzo in the revival of Grease! and as Sally Bowles in Cabaret.
