An Arnold Schwarzenegger fan thanked the action star for making his father smile during a recent viewing of Terminator Genisys - and Schwarzenegger himself personally responded.

User bizzyjay wrote on Reddit July 2: 'Terminator 2 was the first movie I saw with my dad in a movie theater, that experience really sparked a love for film, the kind of passion that my dad had for them.

'From then on we saw a bunch of movies together along the years, including all the terminator movies until now, it was our franchise.'

Bizzyjay said his 72-year-old father, who already had mild dementia and schizophrenia, began to behave differently in January and entered a psychiatric ward.

The Redditor wrote online: 'He eventually got released but heavily medicated, he was stable but he wasn't the same anymore.'

Bizzyjay said for his 30th birthday he went with his father to go see Terminator Genisys.

He wrote: 'During the whole movie I was actually surprised to see my dad enjoying it, not because it was this amazing film we never seen before but because for MONTHS he hasn't smile, he used to be a very happy man and always had a big smile on his face.

'I know it may sound dumb but it felt like a miracle!'

'Thank you /u/GovSchwarzenegger, for making my father smile again,' he said in the Reddit post.

Schwarzenegger wrote back to his fan on Reddit the same day, saying: 'This is so touching.

'Thank you for sharing.

'I'd like to say "this is why I do this" but you should know it was you who made your father smile.

'It was your presence and caring. Happy birthday, you've got a lot of wisdom for 30 years.'

The former governor of California also included a link to an image of a handwritten note intended for bizzjay's father.

It said: 'I am honored that my silly smile in Terminator made you smile, but I hope you find real joy and strength in what a wonderful child you have brought into this world and raised.'

Bizzyjay replied to Schwarzenegger on Reddit, writing 'I am completely overwhelmed!

'So many emotions going through right now!

'Thank you so much /u/GovSchwarzenegger I really don't know what to say?!

'So I'll just say thank you.'

He later updated his message and included two images of him and his father together, one of which showed both men in sunglasses.

Bizzjay wrote: 'We decided to wear our sunglasses in honor of the Terminator, I also took your beautiful note and framed it for my dad.

'He can't believe you would take time to write something so meaningful and personal to him.'
