Death toll rises in Iran earthquake

The death toll in a strong earthquake that hit west Iran today rose to 38, an Iranian Red Crescent official, who asked not to be named, said.

The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.0 and struck Boroujerd and Doroud, two industrial cities in western Iran, at 01:05 local time today(Thursday 21:35 GMT), the official Islamic Republic News Agency reported.

The epicenter was mountainous villages south of Boroujerd and north of Doroud.

One person was killed in Garaj village and two others injured, Doroud governor Nasrollah Rashno told IRNA.

The quake has damaged buildings in rural areas and cut telephone lines, he said.
