Police have released shocking footage of the incident as they warned her 'selfish' actions not only put her life at risk, but that of her children and others.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: 'The 26-year-old revealed that she was due to go into hospital the next day to give birth so instead of immediately arresting Burton, officers called an ambulance and she was taken to hospital to be assessed.

'In the car with Burton were two adults who appeared drunk and her seven-year-old daughter.'

Footage shows her Vauxhall Zafira being pulled over in Uckfield, East Sussex, and breathalysed.

The test showed that Burton of Uckfield, had 45 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of her breath.

Burton admitted driving while over the legal limit, driving without insurance and driving without a licence and she was banned at Brighton Magistrates' Court from driving for 14 months, fined £255 and ordered to pay £235 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.

Chief Inspector Phil Nicholas, of Sussex and Surrey roads policing unit, said: 'The footage shows how our officers have to balance making arrests with ensuring suspects get the right medical treatment when they need it.

'As soon as they discovered that Burton was heavily pregnant they realised that she needed to go to hospital to make sure both her and her unborn baby were ok.

'Burton selfishly decided to get behind the wheel after drinking and put not only her life and the lives of other road users at risk but even that of her daughter. Even if she had not been drinking, Burton should not have been driving as she had neither a licence or insurance.

'A minority of drivers continue to think it is ok for them to drive and drive. We need the help of the community to get people like that off the roads.'

ONE IN THREE WOMEN ADMIT TO BINGE-DRINKING DURING PREGNANCY

Experts have called for new guidelines to be drawn up advising women to drink no alcohol at all while pregnant

A third of British women risk doing severe harm to their unborn babies by binge drinking during pregnancy, a study has revealed.

Experts called for new guidelines to be drawn up advising women to drink no alcohol at all while pregnant, as it emerged that many are ignoring current advice.

Researchers at Cambridge University found that 33 per cent of British women admitted to bingeing – drinking the equivalent of two-thirds of a bottle of wine in a single sitting – at least once during their pregnancy.

They also found that the vast majority – 75 per cent – had drunk at least some alcohol at some point while pregnant.

The findings, published in medical journal BMJ Open, add fuel to an escalating row about the confusing advice offered to pregnant women. Experts in recent weeks have fiercely criticised the conflicting guidelines issued by Britain’s different health bodies, which say mothers can drink at some points of pregnancy but not others. Instead, doctors say, the advice should be replaced with a single message: do not drink while pregnant.

However, some charities say that many women drink before they know that they are pregnant, and later become unnecessarily terrified that they may have harmed their babies.
