Former Liverpool and England captain has begun training for the first time since leaving his boyhood club, as he looks to return to football with new side LA Galaxy.

Gerrard, who had been a Liverpool player for 17 years since his first-team debut in 1998 as a teenager, finally left the Premier League club he had become synonymous with at the end of last season.

And he now joins up with former Anfield team-mate Robbie Keane at the MLS franchise popularised in England by another England captain David Beckham.

Keane and Gerrard, who played together in the Premier League for six months in 2008, were seen chatting during Gerrard's first training session at his new club, ahead of his official unveiling on Tuesday.

The Galaxy's most high-profile players will be looking to inspire their side to a second consecutive MLS Cup, with the franchise currently sitting fourth in the Western conference and in line for a play-off place.

Keane will be hoping to help his former team-mate acclimatise quickly, with over half the regular-season gone and the games beginning to come thick and fast.

The former England captain goes through a warm-up as he begins the process of settling in at a new club for the first time

Gerrard could make his MLS debut in 11 days, when the Galaxy take on San Jose Earthquakes at home - which would limit his own personal 'pre-season' to just over a week.

The former Liverpool captain played over 500 Premier League games for his boyhood club, scoring 120 league goals, and inspiring the Reds to several cup triumphs, most notably in the 2005 Champions League.

But the league title always eluded him and he must hope, with the mixed system of Major League Soccer's play-offs, he is able to finally get his hands on the primary piece of domestic silverware on offer.
