Nine lives and SIX LEGS! Pauly the cat prepares for surgery that will remove his two extra limbs

  • The condition affects only one in 10,000 cats
  • It is believed Pauly absorbed the extra legs from a conjoined twin in the womb as well as an extra kidney
  • Rescue society Little Cats Lost has raised more than $3,000 to pay for Pauly's three surgeries - including one to fix his hip dysplasia
  • After surgery Pauly, who lived on the streets of Edmonton, Canada, will be put into foster care so he can learn to trust humans before adoption

Pauly the cat may have nine lives, but he has two too many legs.

It's a condition that affects one in 10,000 cats and has made it hard for Pauly, who used to live on the streets of Edmonton, Canada, to walk.

But now this fighter of a feline is getting a chance to have a better quality of life, thanks to one rescue society's fundraising efforts.

Little Cats Lost, a trap-neuter-return society, caught Pauly last month and reached out to veterinarian Dr. Tamer Mahmoud, the owner at Edmonton's Oxford Animal Hospital.

Mahmoud said Pauly likely got two legs because in the womb he had a conjoined twin, who only grew two back legs that he then ended up absorbing and are attached to his sternum.

The 7-year-old Pauly also has a small extra kidney and hip dysplasia, which will require a second surgery.

Mahmoud believes Pauly wouldn't be able to live much longer with the two extra legs, which were 'affecting his quality of life', he told Global News

Pauly has been in Mahmoud's care for a couple of weeks to help him build trust with the hospital staff before his three surgeries which, thanks to a pay cut, will only cost $2,000 total.

'The clinic fee is much reduced because we are just trying to save this cat,' said Mahmoud. 'We don't want to make money off him, we are just trying to save him.'

Little Cats Lost raised more than $3,000 this week for the surgery and the extra money will go towards extra costs for Pauly's care as well as the center's trap-neuter-return program.

Pauly is expected to take three weeks to recover from the surgery and will then be put in a foster home to help him learn how to trust humans before he is put up for adoption.

Virginia Marando of Little Cats Lost said Pauly is shy and will need a quiet home.

'Lots of times, kitties like this gravitate to their caregiver and no one else,' she said.

'With the right support from us and the right people, he can actually become a good companion for the people in that home.'
