Fit for a princess? How Nicky Hilton's $75,000 Valentino wedding dress mimics the style of royal brides Kate Middleton, Grace Kelly and Marie-Chantal of Greece

  • The 31-year-old hotel heiress married billionaire banking heir James Rothschild, 31, on Friday wearing a couture Valentino gown
  • The dress featured a high neck, long train and lace sleeves, and was paired with a dramatic lace veil
  • The Duchess of Cambridge, Grace Kelly, Ivanka Trump, Kim Kardashian and more have all worn similar lace styles to walk down the aisle

For her star-studded nuptials at Kensington Palace, Nicky Hilton channeled the palace’s most recently-wed resident, the Duchess of Cambridge, donning a stunning long-sleeve lace gown and traditional veil fit for a royal, which bore a remarkable resemblance to the wedding dress worn by Kate Middleton.

The 31-year-old wed billionaire banking heir James Rothschild, 31, on Friday wearing a $77,000 couture Valentino gown featuring a high-neck and a long train, topping the look off with a dramatic lace veil. However, Nicky is not the first - and certainly not the last celebrity - to choose this particularl style of elegant lace ballgown to say 'I do'.

Indeed, it seems the hotel heiress may have sought inspiration from the many famous royals, socialites and actresses who opted to walk down the aisle in similar lace frocks, aptly taking her style cues from some of the world’s most high society weddings.

And many of the wedding dresses worn by other royals and socialites cost hundreds of thousands dollars, making Nicky's $77,000 frock look fairly inexpensive.

For the Royal Wedding held at London's Westminster Abbey in 2011, Kate wore a long sleeve gown featuring an intricate lace appliqué bodice, a high-waisted, full-skirted silhouette, and a long, dramatic train to say 'I do' to Prince William.

The iconic wedding dress, which cost more than $400,000 and was created by Alexander McQueen's head designer Sarah Burton, mirrored the gown worn by Grace Kelly, who became Princess Grace of Monaco when she married Ranier III, Prince of Monaco, in 1956.

More than a half a century before Kate said 'I do', Grace wore a similar high-waisted ballgown with a lace bodice and a modest high-neck created by Helen Rose of MGM Studio.

The dress reportedly cost $7,000, which is approximately $60,000 today, in materials and manufacturing, not including the designer's salary

The timeless creation also inspired socialites Ivanka Trump and Nicole Richie when they were designing their own wedding gowns.

For her 2009 wedding to real estate heir Jared Kushner, Ivanka wore a classic hand-appliquéd lace dress featuring a modest neckline and mid-length sleeves, which was designed by Vera Wang.

However, Nicole, who co-starred in the reality series The Simple Life with Nicky's sister Paris, opted for a modern long-sleeve lace ballgown by Marchesa, which featured a center cut-out and a fluffy white tulle bottom, when she said 'I do' to Good Charlotte rocker Joel Madden in 2010.

And while Grace's gown has been the source of endless inspiration, Helen Rose actually designed Elizabeth Taylor's wedding gown six years before the blonde actress became the Princess of Monaco.

For her first wedding in 1950, the Elizabeth was given the traditional satin gown as a gift from MGM Studios. She wore the dress, which featured long sleeves, a high-neck and a full silhouette, when she married Conrad 'Nicky' Hilton Jr. - Nicky's great uncle and namesake. However, the two divorced less than a year after they wed.

Meanwhile, Caroline Kennedy wore an '80s version of the classic gowns that had come before hers when she and Edwin Schlossberg tied the knot near Hyannis Port, Massachusetts in 1986.

Her silk organza ball gown, which featured a 25-foot train, was created by one of her mother Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis' favorite designers, Carolina Herrera.

However, when choosing her own gown, Nicky may have sought advice from a family friend.

Crown Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece, who created custom flower girl dresses for Nicky's wedding, wore a $225,000 dress that was incredibly similar to the bride's when she married Pavlos, Crown Prince of Greece, in 1995.

Marie-Chantal may have been feeling nostalgic while attending Nicky's posh nuptials, because the mother-of-five's long-sleeve pearl encrusted wedding gown was also designed by Valentino.

'Ever since I was a little girl I wanted Valentino to design my wedding dress. Valentino is the definition of timeless elegance, I don't think there's another couture house like it,' Nicky told Harper's Bazaar

She added: 'I went through every look from their collections over the last 10 years. I studied the archives, and I just sent notes about details I liked - a certain sleeve, a high neckline.'

When pregnant Sophie Hunter married Benedict Cumberbatch on Valentine's Day, she too opted for a high Victorian neck and long sleeves.

However, her custom gown created by Valentino creative directors Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, featured an empire waist to accommodate her growing baby bump.

Meanwhile, Nicky's fellow socialite - and her sister Paris' sometimes nemesis - Kim Kardashian also wore a lace gown when she married Kanye West last year.

For her third wedding, the reality star opted for a demure gown designed by Givenchy creative director Riccardo Tisci. And while Kim's breathtaking $500,000 dress was classic in almost every way, it did feature lace-covered cut-outs around her slim waist - giving it a modern twist.

However, Nicky's gown most greatly resembles the custom gown Ralph Lauren designed for his daughter-in-law Lauren Bush Lauren in 2011 when she died the knot with his son in Ridgway, Colorado.

While Lauren's Victorian-inspired wedding gown was made of hand-embroidered tulle, it featured a similar high-neck and full silhouette.
