A Belgian newsreader has been forced to apologise for suggesting French President Nicolas Sarkozy was drunk during a news conference at last week's G8 summit.

The French are well-known for their love of a lunchtime tipple and Nicolas Sarkozy - at least at first glance - appeared to be no exception.

At a G8 press conference the newly-elected French President walked onto the podium in a very relaxed fashion.

Sarkozy then proceeded to snigger to himself and swayed slightly as he took questions from journalists with an impish schoolboy grin plastered across his face.

However the French Embassy have declared that the President is a tee-totaller and a Belgian TV anchor who suggested that "it wasn't only water" that Sarkozy had been drinking has since apologised for any offence caused.

The clip was an instant hit on the YouTube website and has been watched hundreds of thousands of times.
