Rooney: Home defeat to Arsenal was the best thing that could have happened to us

Wayne Rooney has claimed Manchester United's positive response to their home defeat by Arsenal last season was key to their Barclays Premiership title triumph.

An Emmanuel Adebayor goal handed the Gunners a 1-0 win at Old Trafford last September, ending Sir Alex Ferguson's side's perfect start to the season.

The result led some to question United's status as genuine title challengers, but they went on to remain unbeaten in the league until a defeat at West Ham just before Christmas as they opened up what proved to be a conclusive lead at the top of the table.

"One result that stands out in my mind is losing to Arsenal at home in September. We went on a brilliant run of wins after that," said Rooney.

"We lost and everyone was saying 'the Reds are going to stumble after this', but we kept on going and we were unbeaten until December in the league.

"That's one of the best things about this team, we're defiant after a defeat. We know we can't afford to let it affect us.

"That comes from the togetherness of the team. We always bounce back after a loss."
