British Davis Cup

captain John Lloyd last

night gave his backing

to troubled coach

Peter Lundgren, who

serves under him.

The former British No 1

confirmed that

Lundgren, whom he

appointed as his No 2,

would be there

alongside him when his

team face Croatia in

the crucial World

Group promotion

match at Wimbledon in

September.

This despite the fact that he has this week

been suspended for a

month by the Lawn

Tennis Association

because of drinkrelated

personal

problems.

Lloyd said: "Peter is my

guy and as Davis Cup

captain he has my

complete support as

coach.

"He will definitely be

back in a month's time.

He has done a fabulous

job with me as far as

the Davis Cup is

concerned.

"He is with me 10 weeks

a year and has been

first class. I'm not going

to comment on the

other stuff, that is

between the LTA and

him."

Around Wimbledon and

among those who

operate in the British

game, opinion is

sharply divided about

the value of Lundgren's

contributions to the

British cause.

One school of thought

is that his large size and

known fondness for a

drink does not set a

good example.

His weight makes him

an easy target for

critics.

But his supporters

point out World No 1

Roger Federer as well

as Russian Marat Safin

have won Grand Slams

under his guidance,

and, whatever his

methods, he has been

able to inspire Alex

Bogdanovic in a way

that other coaches

have not managed.
