Sunderland manager Roy Keane made a £1million move last night to take Aberdeen captain Russell Anderson to the Premiership.

Keane, who admired Anderson's qualities as an opponent during his six-month spell at Parkhead, has targeted the 28-year-old as the perfect man to strengthen his defence.

Anderson learned of Sunderland's interest when he returned from a family holiday in America and on Tuesday night he travelled south with his agent, Blair Morgan, for contract talks.

With a year to go on his Pittodrie deal, Aberdeen would be forced to accept a decent offer and Anderson would jump at the chance of proving himself at the top level.

The defender also believes that such a move would dramatically enhance his Scotland credentials.

Towards the end of last season, the player was watched by Middlesbrough, Newcastle and Manchester City but now Sunderland are prepared to back their interest with a formal bid.
