Northern lasses' Blondie ambition

Last updated at 11:27 05 October 2007

Both Emma Williams and Kelly

Price are imbued with a strong

Northern work ethic - and a

burning desire to entertain.

They're the leading ladies of the

brand-new West End musical

Desperately Seeking Susan,

featuring the music of Blondie

On Monday, they and the rest of

the company moved from their

rehearsal lodgings into the Novello

Theatre to prepare for the show's

first preview on October 16.

Desperately Seeking Susan has

been adapted from the 1985 movie

of the same name, which starred

Madonna and Rosanna Arquette

as two disparate souls involved

with unlikely suitors in

downtown Manhattan.

I was impressed by Emma and

Kelly in a rousing workshop

version of the musical last year, and

it has its gala opening on

November 15 with Debbie Harry

and Ms Arquette in attendance.

Madonna's been invited but hasn't

said 'yes' yet.

I've had an eye on Ms Williams

and Ms Price for a while — Emma

was in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

and Kelly in a workshop version of

It's A Wonderful Life and the

recent Guys And Dolls.

Kelly moved from her home

town of Ashton-in-Makerfield

near Wigan several years ago and,

as she noted: 'To move away from

your family and down to London,

that's very tough. You have to

have an extreme focus.'

Emma, who hails from Halifax,

agreed. 'It's like a jungle down

here in London and you have to

become savvy to deal with it all.'

When Debbie Harry heard them

sing, she said they didn't need any

help to handle Blondie's songs.

Emma and Kelly are that good,

as you will see.
