Watford hit back only for Lee to thow it away

Last updated at 21:31 24 November 2007

Watford keeper Richard Lee's shocking own goal condemned the Championship leaders to their second away defeat of the season.

Barnsley had Watford reeling at

2-0 before Danny Shittu headed

two goals to go in level at half time.

But Barnsley were gifted a

66th-minute winner when Lee

dropped Brian Howard's free

kick into his own net.

Watford were furious in the last

minute when referee Mike Pike

denied them a penalty when

Dennis Souza dragged down

Marlon King in the box.

Barnsley skipper and talisman

Howard opened the scoring in

the 31st minute after Dominik Werling's thundering free kick

was headed out and he reacted

quickest to smash it past Lee.

Three minutes later Jamal

Campbell-Ryce's cross was met

by Martin Devaney to double the

advantage. But Watford's

resilience shone through as they

hit back with two textbook

headers from defender Shittu.

Hungarian Istvan Ferenczi

wasted a golden opportunity to

restore Barnsley's lead in the

63rd minute but soon afterwards

Lee dropped his clanger under

pressure from Lewin Nyatanga.
