Ben Affleck looks glum while stepping out with his kids in Atlanta as it's revealed he will write, star in and direct a stand-alone Batman film

  • Ben and Jennifer announced their plans to divorce on June 30
  • They have since vacationed in the Bahamas and are now in Atlanta
  • Jennifer is in the Georgian city to shoot her movie Miracles From Heaven
  • On Friday it was announced Ben would write, direct and star in a stand-alone Batman movie

Ben Affleck stepped out in Atlanta on Friday looking downcast in a blue shirt, rolled up jeans and scruffy salt-and-pepper beard as he was joined by two of his children, Seraphina, aged six, and Samuel, aged three.

Though he's been struggling with his personal life due to the recent announcement of his split from wife of 10 years, Jennifer Garner, 43, it hasn't been all bad news for the 42-year-old actor.

On Friday, it was announced by Deadline that the Oscar winner will be writing, starring in and directing a stand-alone Batman film. This is in addition to the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice movie that is due out in March 2016.

The Hollywood star will reportedly co-write the movie with Geoff Johns, DC Comics' chief creative officer.

Deadline added that Affleck and Johns have already made considerable progress on the script and are scheduled to turn in a draft by the end of the summer.

Johns is chief creative officer at DC and a honed veteran; he's written some of the comic book giant's most revered series including Green Lantern, Aquaman, Batman, Justice League, The Flash and Superman.

And Affleck has proved to be a force worth reckoning on the other side of the lens, with his Best Picture winner Argo and the Boston-based crime thriller The Town.

The duo are predicted to finish the stand-alone Batman script just in time for Affleck to head off to direct his film adaptation of the Dennis Lehane novel Live By Night.

Nearly nothing about the forthcoming stand-alone Batfilm has been revealed, other than it's happening.

But the plot will reflect the sullen superhero after his appearances in next year's Batman v Superman and 2017's Justice League.

Both upcoming adaptations will see Batman fighting evil alongside other DC universe superheroes - something that wasn't seen in the most recent Christopher Nolan trilogy.

And little word has surfaced about the plot of Batman v Superman, leaving fans to wonder: 'Why are they fighting?' 'Aren't they both good guys?'

Although it's possible that Bruce Wayne may be holding a grudge against the flying hero from Krypton after he inadvertently took out one of Wayne Industries' skyscrapers while attempting to save the world in Man Of Steel.

During a Comic-Con panel, Affleck hinted towards this theory as reported by Entertainment Weekly: 'One of the things I liked was Zack’s idea of showing accountability and the consequences of violence and seeing that there are real people in those buildings. And in fact, one of those buildings was Bruce Wayne’s building so he knew people who died in that Black Zero event.'

In a statement to People magazine, the pair said: 'After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce.

'We go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children whose privacy we ask to be respected during this difficult time. This will be our only comment on this private, family matter. Thank you for understanding.'

While a source told People.com that the marriage is ending because: 'He couldn't deal with her expectations. Part of why this happened is her being controlling and unhappy.'

Ben is expected to appear at Comic-Con in San Diego on Saturday, where he will sign autographs for fans.
