There's parties in the streets in China ahead of the Beijing Olympics, strikes have hit transport in Germany, and Lenin's statue gets towed along the Danube. In its full technicolour glory, we bring you TravelMail's Pictures of the Week...

PoTW

Bali: That's sure to leave a mark - a Balinese Hindu devotee stabs himself with his 'keris' dagger during their annual soul-cleaning ceremony called 'Melasti' at a beach in Sanur, Bali, Indonesia. Balinese Hindus do this before celebrating their new year, or Nyepi Day, where they are not allowed to travel, work, light lamps, cook or do any other activities.

California: Diesel and petrol prices soared to a record high of more than £60 per barrel but that doesn't seem to be bothering this American big-rig caught on film trundling along Highway 395 near Hesperia.

PoTW

Dominican Republic: It's party time in Santo Domingo. They hold their carnival later in the year here so that the good-time vibes don't clash with Ash Wednesday - which is probably the last thing on these revellers' minds.

PoTW

China: These kids are waiting in the wings before they dress up for the Shehuo harvest festival in their village of Xiaopo in Lantian county, Shaanxi province, China.

PoTW

Spain: A cold snap in northern Spain has left these mares and colts hungry and looking for fodder in Soto, Cantabria. Strong winds and snow hit the area and severly disrupted travel in the region.

PoTW

Hungary: Lenin is back in Europe - this time on the Danube. Pieces of a statue (some as tall as 12m) get towed along to become part of a backdrop of a movie entitled 'Budapest'.

PoTW

Chile: This ship is barely visible as it travels along the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Valparaiso city, about 75 miles northwest of Santiago, where close to 9,000 acres of land have been destroyed by forest fires.

PoTW

Berlin: Slightly removed from the Middle East, these two Touaregs in traditional nomadic clothes are looking rather surly at the world's leading travel trade show ITB which took place this week in Berlin.

PoTW

California: And finally... this grey whale (otherwise known as the Eschrichtius robustus) is seen at the Ojo de Liebre in the Baja California peninsula during its travels along the Eastern Pacific ocean coasts, off Mexico. Every year, thousands of tourists, environmental workers and locals emerge to take a look at this amazing natural spectacle.
