An echo of another famous political dawn as Boris Johnson's wife 'does a Cherie Blair'

It may well come to be known as Marina Johnson's "Cherie Blair moment".

As the wife of London's new Mayor reached out yesterday to retrieve a bottle of bubbly left by a well-wisher – and a batch of papers dominated by reports of her husband's electoral triumph – she was, inevitably, caught in the lens of a cameraman.

Although the 42-year-old barrister was no doubt looking her usual elegant self, she managed to stay half-hidden behind her door, perhaps recalling the ambush sprung on Mrs Blair after Labour's Election victory in 1997.

Then, photographers were waiting as a bleary, unkempt Cherie, still in her nightie, took in a bouquet after being woken at 6.30 on a Saturday morning by a florist ringing the bell.

On Friday night Mrs Johnson took children Cassia, Milo, Lara and Theo to City Hall to see their father make his acceptance speech.

After shaking hands with the vanquished Ken Livingstone, he gave an early indication of the style of rule he is likely to adopt by telling supporters: "Let's get cracking tomorrow and let's have a drink tonight."
