But the couple put on a brave face, vowing to remain friends in an "amicable" split.

A statement from Coronation Street broadcaster ITV said: "With great sadness, Kym and Jack Ryder have decided to separate after seven years together.

"Their separation is amicable and they remain friends, with Jack continuing to see Kym's children, David and Emily.

"There is no-one else involved in the break up of their marriage.

"Neither Jack nor Kym will be commenting further to the press, and in consideration of the children's emotional welfare they have requested the media respect their privacy on this occasion."

The marriage has reportedly been in trouble since Kym shot to fame playing Michelle Connor on Coronation Street as Jack's career took a back seat.

Jack, 26, who played Jamie Mitchell on EastEnders, has played stepdad to the couple's two children, David, 12 , and Emily, 10, ever since.

The couple married in St Albans in 2002, selling their pictures to OK! magazine for a reported £300,000.

They split temporarily a year later before reconciling.

The trial separation was due to "experiencing some turbulence" in their relationship, according to the actress's management company.

Three years later they moved to Manchester to be closer to her family while Jack continued touring theatres, leading increasingly separate lives as Kym is often seen out without her husband.

Kym, 31, first first found fame on ITV show Popstars in 2001 and became one of five people chosen to be part of pop group Hear'say.

The group enjoyed a brief stint in the limelight but tensions sizzled and Kym allegedly fell out with fellow band member Mylene Klass.

She then moved onto acting in 2006 when she joined Coronation Street as singer and barmaid Michelle where she has become one of the show's most popular character and was voted Best Newcomer and Best New Actress.

Jack's TV career, however, has slowed-down since EastEnders, appearing in several theatre productions including the comedy Single Spies, starring alongside Nigel Havers and Diana Quick.
