Henry Cecil in Run for Derby

Henry Cecil may have seen Twice Over's Vodafone Derby credentials fade away with defeat in last week's Dante Stakes at York but he could still have a runner at Epsom.

A question mark has hung over the participation of his 16-1 shot Kandahar Run, who won the 10-furlong Newmarket Stakes on 2,000 Guineas day.

The colt had the option of heading to the French Derby on Sunday week, where he would have tried to avenge the defeat of Hurricane Run, who carried the same colours to a narrow defeat by Shamardal in 2005.

But yesterday Crispin de Moubray, who advises owners Gestut Ammerland, said: 'We are pretty much leaning to Epsom.

There are stamina questions but the horse settled well last time.

'Henry thinks the stop-go pace they get in France, where they go off fast and then slow it down, won't suit him as much as the Derby where they will go a consistent pace

' William Hill have Kandahar Run sharing his Derby price with Godolphin's seemingly stamina challenged Ibn Khaldun.

The decision to scratch him from Saturday's Irish 2,000 Guineas sets up his likely challenge for the Derby as Frankie Dettori's mount.

Goodwood's May meeting has long given up aspirations of staging serious Epsom trials and yesterday's David Wilson Homes Stakes - better known to those long out of short trousers in its previous guise as the Predominate Stakes - had no effect on the Classic picture despite a fair effort by the Brian Meehantrained City Leader.

The Sangster family-owned winner gave weight to most of his opponents and came home three-quarters of a length clear of Scintillo.

But Meehan said: 'He is likely to go for the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot. Jamie did not think Epsom would be the right track for him and the owners aren't short of Derby winners.'

John Gosden's Michita, however, is scheduled to head to Epsom. She may not have beaten too much in the Height of Fashion Stakes, but she did it in style to earn Oaks quotes of 16-1.
