Cate Blanchett and the incredibly lurid Bacofoil dress

Cate Blanchett rarely puts a foot wrong, but clearly even she’s no stranger to the odd red-carpet faux pas.

The Elizabeth actress stepped out in a Bacofoil inspired dress which did her svelte figure no favours.

Cate’s shiny look was a clear misstep which left her looking like a trussed up oven-ready turkey at the Australian premiere for her new film, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, in her hometown, Sydney.

It also had the unfortunate effect of making her look bigger than she probably would have liked.

The 39-year-old actress recently cut an elegant figure at the Cannes Film Film festival for the world premiere of the fourth instalment of the celebrated film franchise.

Oscar-winner Cate unveiled an extremely svelte look considering she had given birth to her third child Ignatius in Sydney on April 13th.

The couple also have sons Dashiel, six, and Roman, three.

Cate stars alongside Harrison Ford, 69, as the whip-wielding archaeologist in "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" directed again by Steven Spielberg.

Frock horror: The dress had the unfortunate effect of making svelte Cate look much wider

She has said: “I’ve got the ugliest hairstyle I’ve ever seen - a sort of pudding bowl helmet cut.

“If that doesn’t send signals that she’s the bad girl then there’s no point.”

Cate plays Spalko, a Soviet spy, in the film and admits she loved the chance to be a baddie.

Cate called the blunt bob hairstyle  she wore in the film 'the ugliest hairstyle ever'

She revealed: “I actually found it quite liberating playing a really bad person.”

Cate’s co-star, Shia LaBeouf, heaped praise on the actress.

He said: “I think that Cate is incredible. She might be the scariest villain in any of these films. She's terrifying.”

Cate revealed she doesn’t plan on making any more movies for the time being as she is “happily enriched” with motherhood and the theatre company she runs in Sydney with screenwriter husband Andrew Upton.
