aring to go bare: Orange Is The New Black's Ruby Rose is make-up free as she emerges from the spa day in boyish baggy harem trousers and football shirt

She's been open about wanting to look like a boy from the age of five even saving up dollars for gender transition surgery which she later decided against.

And on Friday Orange Is The New Black star Ruby Rose showed off her versatile sartorial savvy in baggy harem trousers, a football shirt and high top trainers as she meandered around Hollywood.

Striking a boyish silhouette, the 'gender fluid' Australian, 29, pulled off a dressed-down gangster look for a morning at the spa.

The feline-featured model and DJ was barely recognisable as she hid behind a cap and mirrored sun glasses and baggy clothes.

Looking relaxed and carefree, she spent the morning at Kate Somerville Spa in Hollywood switching off from real life for a few pampered hours.

The Melbourne-born star, who came out age 12 after being bullied at school, opened up about how a daytime segment on Oprah sparked her desire to save up for the surgical procedure.

She told Access Hollywood: 'I had this jar that I would collect dollars, in fact it was probably cents, so I had like 19 cents to go towards this surgery that I didn't really know a lot about,' she said.

'I started saving probably from the age of like five and when I got to 15, that's when I got more into my body and I shaved my head and my mum was just like, "I don't know what's going on right now, but if you are happy then do it".

The fiancee of designer Phoebe Dahl has been open about her gender, describing herself as 'gender fluid', and says it was as a teenager that she began to decipher who she was.

'I started to change the way that I dressed and talked and I realised that I didn't want to transition and I just wanted to be more comfortable in my own skin,' she explained.

The face of Maybelline debuted a short film on sexuality and gender called Break Free last July, which addressed the sometimes controversial aspects of her sexuality.

It attracted more than eight million views but it wasn't until she starred in Netflix drama Orange Is The New Black and stripped off for a shower scene that she became the focus of a media storm.

She told Daily Mail Australia last year: 'I was in Beverly Hills on Rodeo Drive wearing these Calvin Klein's real high and jeans hanging low when I heard someone scream "Justin Bieber!"'

'I was like "Please don't be me" and sure enough these girls came running up and were like "Oh my gosh, we're so sorry, we didn't realise you were a girl".
