British serviceman's daughter, 2, drowns in paddling pool at family barbecue in Cyprus

A British serviceman's two-year-old daughter has drowned in a paddling pool during a family barbecue in Cyprus, it has been revealed.

The little girl, who has been named as Lucie Marke, was still breathing when she was pulled from the water, but died later in hospital.

The incident happened at her father's base in Akrotiri, officials said.

Cyprus Police have launched an investigation into her death and have not ruled out criminal activity.

The toddler's body has now been flown back  to RAF Lyneham in Wiltshire, but the Ministry of Defence has refused to identify her father or his regiment.

It is understood the family come from Elgin in north-east Scotland.

A post-mortem will now take place in Britain to confirm the exact cause of  her death.

Yesterday an inquest was opened in Salisbury, Wiltshire.

After hearing evidence of identification, Assistant Wiltshire Coroner David Ridley adjourned the hearing.
