Forest fall short again as Preston take the points

Preston manager Alan Irvine saw his side see off Nottingham Forest

Preston pulled away from a struggling Nottingham Forest with two goals in the
first 13 minutes of the second half, but then an own-goal gave their opponents hope.

Youl Mawene headed Preston’s first after 49 minutes. The powerful French defender met a corner from Darren Carter and was able to head past Paul Smith from near the
penalty spot.

Eight minutes later it was 2-0. Striker Neil Mellor was almost on his knees as he slid in to head in at the far post after Barry Nicholson had sent the ball over.

The visitors needed to put their campaign back on track after two successive defeats dropped them down the table, and they were given a lifeline after 67 minutes when Mawene headed Lee Martin’s cross into his own net.

Carter was determined to make the most of his first Championship start of the season, driving forward from midfield in a bid to make the breakthrough for Preston.

He owed his call-up to Richard Chaplow's hamstring injury and after going close on several occasions hit a fierce long shot only to see Smith respond with a fine tip-over.
