Jools Holland acts like a fool in love... with the first lady of France, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy

Jools Holland appeared to fall for the charms of France's first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy as he gushed and swooned through an interview with the erstwhile chanteuse on his show Later.

When confronted on the live show by Italian-born Carla, a former supermodel  -  and, lest we forget, a woman who numbers Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton among her many exes  -  he turned into a gibbering, pubescent wreck.

France's first lady: Jools seemed very taken with the wife of France's President Nicolas Sarkozy

Moreover, as Holland reminded the audience twice in the first two minutes, she is also 'the first lady of France'.

Suggesting that were she not married to Nicolas Sarkozy, the President of western Europe's third most important state, her album, Comme Si De Rien N'Etait (As If Nothing Happened) - Number 58 in the British charts - would not have been allowed through Later's usually discerning doors in a month of dimanches.

The former supermodel turned singer-songwriter admitted she often woke her husband in the middle of the night by playing her songs.

Carla admitted to sometimes keeping her husband up at night with her music

Bruni said her husband was 'very kind' about her songs and her music did not 'drive him mad'.

She said: 'I play it at home and I disturb him with it in the middle of the night. It's just a very different world for him.

'I have my husband's world. It's like I just try to be with him and be cool about it and not change everything I know and my way of living. It's not so hard.'

'It's just like playing in a film. I don't really mix them up  -  I separate them. I play my music and then I go with my husband when he needs me.'

When asked whether she had ever composed a song for him she replied: 'Well, I write songs about my life.'

Along with Jools she chatted to rockers Metallica posing for photos around his grand piano.

She then took to the stage with her guitar to perform for the studio audience.

Carla became a style sensation as she showcased her elegant Dior wardrobe on her first state visit to Britain with husband Sarkozy.

She played the role of first lady perfectly, holding her own with the Queen and Prince Philip, PM Gordon  Brown and his wife Sarah.

Carla's April visit to Britain was marked by the sale of a naked photograph of her by auction house Christie's.

Before her marriage to Sarkozy Carla Bruni dated a number of celebrities including Donald Trump.

And she recently caused controversy by admitting to having had 15 partners over the years.French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife Carla Bruni
