United keeper Van der Sar relishing European challenge

Edwin Van der Sar says Manchester United must quickly banish the memory of Saturday's defeat by Liverpool as they seek to be the first club to successfully defend the European Cup.

The veteran goalkeeper was at fault for Liverpool's equaliser in the 2-1 loss at Anfield. His attempt to palm the ball clear was half-hearted and it struck Wes Brown and diverted back past him into the unguarded goal.

But United have the chance to bounce back when they face Villlarreal in the Champions League on Wednesday.

No team have successfully defended the Champions League since its inception in 1992, although Van der Sar, a winner with Ajax in 1995, went close a year later before the Dutch club lost on penalties to Juventus in the final.

'Becoming the first team to defend the Champions League is a great challenge', he said.

'It was a great moment for me in Moscow, so many years after winning it the first time. But once you achieve it, you must put it away and move on. If we have a bad start in Europe, you don't have time to enjoy the results from last year. You then get attacked from all sides.'

Van der Sar, 37, has yet to decide his future after the end of this season but added: 'Before I finish, I want to win one or two more prizes.'
